Adding a switch solved the on off problem
I use a 5 volt Li Ion power pack for charging and jump starting. Any small emergency charger for a cell phone would help to start the unit.

I bought my GNS5870 from the web shop. There have been many reports of problems with the swipe on off, the company said that some devices needed a firmware update which has to be done at the factory. Even if the swipe woul work reliably, I still dont want it since the unit can turn all by itself by touching other objects. I installed a sub miniature rocker switch at the side of the USB connector and that solved the off problem. Swiping on can still be difficult, but the unit starts as soon as you connect it to 5 volts. I then flip the switch to connect the battery and the unit continues to work as the external power source is withdrawn. I use a 5 volt Li Ion power pack for charging and jump starting. No problem pairing with an ipad, and the GPS function works fine. I just cant figure out why they didnt use a conventional mechanical ON/OFF switch. I know theres a cool factor associated with using finger gestures but.. cmon.. on a GPS puck? Predictably, the unit turns on and off without warning just from routine handling. This is not good when its being used for aircraft navigation. The last thing I need is a device that I have to carefully handle to avoid inadvertent operation. Advice for manufacturer: the next time one of your engineers comes in and says "watch this!," send them packing.
